In order to promote basketball among Sri Lankan females; the Basketball Women’s
Development Committee has identified it is important to carry out training programs promoting more female coaches and referees.
Therefore, with the aim of giving expert advice in physical and mental development as well as technical and skill specific training in basketball, a training workshop has been conducted in 19th and 20th December 2018 for female coaches and referees at the National Institute of Sport Science (NISS). The Ministry of Sports contributed the financial aid for the two days workshop.
Mr. Ajith Kuruppu and Mr. Chathura Rodrigo carried out all the practical lessons of the
workshop. Particularly, they emphasized basic skills, performance enhancement methods and code of ethics for basketball coaches and referees.
Mr.Tusitha Yatigammane conducted the FIBA rules and regulations lesson. Mr. Sajith Jayalal, director of the NISS delivered his lecture on principles of coaching and general theory of training. Ms. U.N.J. Dahanayake, lecturer in the NISS delivered a lecture in nutrition for Basketball players. Looking at the psychological aspects in Basketball, Dr. Samantha Nanayakkara delivered a lecture on developing coach-player working relationships.
Ms. T.L.C. Lasanthika contributed teaching and practice in first-aid for
basketball coaches and referees. It should be noted that all the lectures were delivered
bilingually, Ms. VinojaElimohan, a lecturer in the NISS coordinated all the lectures translating
into Tamil language.
