It’s been 100 years since the inception of basketball as a sport in Sri Lanka. It had gone through a process of development all these years to see what it is in Sri Lanka today. But in a bold step towards the next level of Basketball in Sri Lanka , SLBF launched the inaugural edition of the Sri Lanka Basketball League (SLBL) yesterday at the National Olympic Committee Auditorium .
The tournament is scheduled to work off with the six franchised teams playing a group stage in the round robin format. The preliminary stage will consist of 30 matches played on a home and away basis. Upon the conclusion of the initial rounds, the four top teams will qualify for the semi-finals which will be played as a best of three matches. The franchised teams are, Jaffna Crabs, Batticaloa Sunrise, Colombo Warriors, Galle Express, Kandy Kings and Gampaha Jets.
With the rapid popularization of 3x3 Basketball in Sri Lanka and the World, Sri Lanka has given the fitting example that the traditional 5x5 Basketball is still important. Although it was a dream of SLBF for quite some time, Sri Lanka Basketball Federation is able make it a reality by the platinum sponsorship of SLT Mobitel.
